Magic: The Gathering at The Dragon Hangar – Play, Learn & Join the Community

Magic: The Gathering has been bringing people around tables for more than 30 years, and it’s still one of the biggest and most varied trading card games in the world. Whether you love building decks, collecting cards, discovering new sets or just sitting down for a few casual games with friends, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Magic.

At The Dragon Hangar in Raymond Terrace, we’re building an active local Magic: The Gathering community where the focus isn’t only on buying cards or organised tournaments. You can join us for a Prerelease, come along to our fortnightly Tuesday Night Commander, organise a game through our Discord community or simply grab a table for some casual Magic.

What Is Magic: The Gathering?

Magic: The Gathering — usually shortened to MTG or simply Magic — is a trading card game where players build decks using creatures, spells, artifacts and other cards before battling against one another. With more than 30 years of releases behind it, there’s an enormous variety of cards, strategies and ways to play.

That variety is one of the reasons Magic has remained so popular. Some players love carefully building and improving decks, some enjoy collecting particular cards and sets, while others are mainly interested in the social side of getting four people around a table for a game of Commander.

There isn’t one “correct” way to enjoy Magic. Find the part of the hobby that interests you and start there.

Commander at The Dragon Hangar

Commander has become one of the most popular ways to play Magic, particularly for people who enjoy the social side of the game. It’s commonly played with four players, with each person bringing a 100-card deck built around a legendary creature known as their Commander.

At The Dragon Hangar, we run Tuesday Night Magic: Commander every fortnight. These nights are about getting people together, finding a pod, playing some games and meeting other local Magic players.

You don’t need to turn up with the strongest deck in the room, and you certainly don’t need years of experience. Bring your Commander deck, find some players and get involved. If you’re newer to Commander, it’s also a good opportunity to meet people who can help you get comfortable with the format.

Casual Magic – Play Any Day

You don’t have to wait for an organised event to play Magic at The Dragon Hangar.

Our gaming space is available for casual play throughout the week, so if you and a few friends want somewhere to play, you’re welcome to come in and grab a table. Whether you’re playing Commander, testing a new deck or just looking for somewhere to get a few games in, you don’t need to wait until Tuesday night.

We want The Dragon Hangar to be somewhere people actually use their games, rather than simply somewhere they buy them. Having a local place where you can meet other players, make some friends and regularly get your cards onto the table is a big part of what we’re trying to build.

Magic: The Gathering Prerelease Nights

One of our favourite times to play Magic is when a brand-new set is about to arrive.

We run Magic: The Gathering Prerelease nights at The Dragon Hangar, giving players the chance to open and play with cards from a new set before its full release. Rather than bringing your usual deck, everyone receives a Prerelease kit and builds a deck from the cards they open.

That makes Prerelease one of the most entertaining Magic events because everyone is discovering the new set together. Nobody has spent months perfecting a deck or learning every interaction. You open your cards, figure out what you’ve got, build the best deck you can and see what happens.

If you’re relatively new to Magic, don’t assume Prerelease events are only for experienced or competitive players either. They’re a great opportunity to learn more about deck building, meet other players and experience a new Magic set for the first time alongside everyone else.

Find Local Magic Players Through Our Discord

One of the biggest hurdles when getting into a trading card game isn’t actually learning the rules. It’s finding people to play against.

That’s where our Dragon Hangar Discord community comes in. We’ve got an active community of local tabletop gamers, including Magic players chatting about decks, organising games, discussing new releases and keeping up with upcoming events at the store.

It means you don’t necessarily have to walk into the shop and hope somebody happens to be looking for a game. You can join the Discord, introduce yourself, chat with other players and organise a game before you arrive.

For us, that connection between the physical store and our online community is really important. The cards might be what gets you interested in Magic, but having people to regularly play against is what can turn it into a long-term hobby.

New to Magic? You Don't Need to Know Everything

Looking at Magic from the outside can seem a little overwhelming. There are decades of cards, different formats, new releases, deck-building terminology and enough information online to make you think you need to study before you’re allowed to sit down and play.

You really don’t.

If Commander interests you, a preconstructed Commander deck can give you a complete playable deck without needing to understand deck building from day one. If a particular new release catches your attention, a Prerelease can be a fun way to explore it. Start with the fundamentals, play some games and learn the rest as you go.

If you’re standing in front of the Magic range at The Dragon Hangar wondering what on earth you’re supposed to buy, just ask us. We’d much rather help you find the right starting point than sell you a pile of products you don’t actually need.

Trading card games are at their best when there’s a community around them. Opening boosters and building decks is fun, but ultimately those cards are designed to end up on a table opposite another player.

That’s why we’re putting so much emphasis on giving local Magic players somewhere to actually meet and play. Between our fortnightly Tuesday Night Commander, Prerelease nights, casual gaming space and active Discord community, there are plenty of ways to get involved without needing to be a hardcore competitive player.

If you already play Magic, come down and meet some new opponents. If you haven’t played for years, dig out that old deck and get back into it. If you’ve never played before but keep wondering what Magic is all about, come in and have a chat.
